Coins use the “Sheldon Scale” of Grading:
- The 70-point system indicates “70” as a perfect coin. (There has never been a coin graded as a “70” prior to the 1940’s).
- Mint State (MS) coins are the preferred coins, especially when purchasing Pre-33 gold.
- MS65 is GEM quality and highly recommended.
There are 3 major grading service companies:
- Professional Coin Grading Service was formed in 1985. PCGS has always held a high standard in the coin industry.
- Numismatic Guarantee Corporation was formed in 1986.
- Certified Acceptance Corporation was founded In November 2007 by leading members of the numismatic community to establish stringent standards for quality within a grade. Fifteen years later in 2022, CAC formed a Grading Service, utilizing the same stringent standards, with an unparalleled level of expertise, to every submitted coin – CACG.
Recommendations regarding grading and certification:
- Buying the highest-grade coins is KEY when building an Ultra Rare portfolio.
- Some of these great rarities can be in AU condition (About Uncirculated). AU coins still have mint luster, but also have a little wear.
- When building your portfolio, always invest in the best.
- The higher the grade, the more rare the coin is and the greater appreciation you will yield.
- When purchasing Rarity, always buy CAC certified coins.
- PCAG, Inc. is an authorized CAC representative company.
